Hey Homemaker! Today we're talking the qualities of a homemaker. What characteristics should good homemakers posses? What skills and qualities make us good homemakers?
When I first got married I admit I was not a good homemaker. A couple years into our marriage I found myself unemployed and I was thrown into the role of homemaking without any real training. I had no idea what qualities a good homemaker should have. Shortly after I was let go from my job I became pregnant with the twins, and I was considered a high-risk pregnancy. So the job search was over and I was officially in my role of homemaker without a clue of what to do or how to do it. I’d like to say in a few months I had it all figured out and my house was in tip-top shape and when my husband came home the children and I looked our best and a hot meal was on the table. but that was absolutely not the case. Despite the fact that we lived in a tiny 900 sq. ft apartment it was a mess and so where we. Not to mention my husband came home to cook the meal for our family because I had no idea how to cook.
Being a good homemaker was something I learned and the qualities I will talk about in a second were something that developed over time. If you feel like your not a “good” homemaker. I’d like you to add the word “yet” the end of that sentence. “I am not a good homemaker YET!” If you really work at it you can become the housewife you aspire to be.
For me, I started to look at the women in my life who I had the qualities I wanted to possess. Even if they worked outside the home because for me many of them did. When I sat back and thought about what I felt made them good homemakers these were the qualities I began to see in them. Women like my mom, my grandmothers, and my aunts. I started to pay attention and these are the qualities I feel a good homemaker strives for.
Disclaimer: If being a homemaker or stay at home mom is not something you're interested in, then, by all means, please do what you feel God has called you to do. I truly believe that everyone should do what is right for their family and this video is not intended shame women who want or need to work. I feel all women should be respected to matter where they work in or out of the home.
Ok, let's get started!
As part of being a homemaker, a woman should strive for these qualities. And I say strive because we are not going to get it right all the time. We will fall short and make mistakes. Depending on the season of life were in things will be different for each homemaker.
So the first quality of a good homemaker
1. She strives spends her time wisely.
We live in a digital age and we are bombarded with screens, from phones to tv’s heck we even have them in on the refrigerated door now. So choosing your time wisely is so important. I found that good homemakers live by a schedule.
and are disciplined with their schedules and time. They stick to that schedule because it helps them accomplish their daily chores. If you are looking for a schedule I link a video on my cleaning schedule in the description box. One thing I also found was that they usually teach their children to live by a scheduled routine as well, so everyone in the home can thrive. But they are also flexible. They know that even though it’s important to schedule their time, life happens. Kids get sick, cars break down or friend may need their help. Homemaking requires a lot of flexibility and they learn to roll with the punches. A big reason being self-disciplined and scheduling their time is so important is it allows them to be flexible they have to be.
Prov. 31:27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
2. They strive to do their job well.
They are productive and diligent and treats their homemaking duties like a full-time career. That means she’s is hard-working even when the going gets tough and goes above and beyond for her family. Good homemakers take pride in creating a clean and tidy home. Typically a good housekeeper is organized. It’s important for her to have a place where things belong, and she keeps things picked up and in their place. Things like running out of clean clothes or empty pantries do happen often because she stays on top of her chores and plans meals ahead of time. I also have a few videos on how to be more organized and tidy at home so I will those videos as well.
Ecc. 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might.
3. They strive to build up their husband and children.
They are uplifting. I’m not going to pretend I’m always a joy to be around or that I never lose my temper but I do strive to be a source of encouragement for my family. Remember we set the tone for our home the same way a boss or manager sets the tone for an office. It’s important for us to gentle and patient. To nurture our loved ones. Our husbands and children should see us as compassionate and caring people.
Prov. 16:24 Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
4. They strive to honors her role as homemakers.
We are the keepers of our home. It is our responsibility to make the home a place our family enjoys being in. To do our best to make our homes a place of peace. Home is where the memories are made and even though we can’t always control the bad ones it a good homemaker tries to create as many good ones as she can. Whether it be through special traditions or feminine touches throughout the home. Good homemaking is more than just “staying at home” It creating a loving home.
One thing we need to remember is how important our job really is. Never downplay your role as a homemaker we have value.
Titus 2:3-5 to be keepers at home.

Qualities Of A Homemaker (WHAT MAKES A GOOD HOMEMAKER) -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ti0K2... #Homemaker#homemaking#femininity
I started to think about my grandmother's and how they managed their homes. I actually have 3 grandmothers my mom’s mom, Marie who live me most of my childhood, my dad’s mom, Lois and my biological dad’s mom Rosa. They all lived much different lives. My Grandma Marie raised 8 children in a small apartment, my Grandma Lois raised 3 children in 3 bedroom home while managing a full-time nursing career, and my Grandma Rosa raised 2 children while running a business from her home.
I wondered how they did it without all the modern amenities we have now. They didn’t have dishwashers, cell phones, or huge capacity washers and dryers we have now. My grandmothers lived modest lives but they all had hot meals on the table, their houses were clean and tidy and their husband always had a pressed shirt.
Why is that with all the modern age luxuries we have so many of of us still feel overwhelmed with managing our homes??
I thought hard about it and figure out just how we as modern housewives can have success as homemakers in the 21st century. Here’s want I’ve come up with to save us time and our sanity…
SAY GOODBY TO DISTRACTIONS One thing we have that our grandmothers didn’t is a million different screens. Cell phones, iPads, T.V’s in almost every room of the house, we can even video chat with our friends. You have to find out what is sucking up all your time and eliminate it! For me, I can easily get trapped in Instagram or a T.V. series. If I start scrolling Instagram while I drink my morning coffee I will most certainly go on scrolling long after my cup of finished. T.V. series are the worst. I just finished watching all 9 seasons of Little House on the Perrie and I can’t tell how much less productive I was. It was so easy to put on an episode while I folded a load of laundry and the next thing I knew my husband was on his way home and I barely got anything done. Find out what doesn’t have any real value, what’s that wasting your time and get rid of it. Learn to say no or use it as a reward for when you’ve finished your to-do list.
USE APPS AND BE ALITTLE TECH_SAVVY One great thing about technology is used right it can be a great resource for us. It’s important to be a bit tech-savvy you don’t need to need to know how to create a website from scratch but know the basics like checking your search history to see what sites your children have been visiting or pin your favorite recipes to Pinterest so you can access them quickly when your meal planning. Apps are a great time saver too. Some of my faves you can also use right on your desktop. Like Google Keep. I love this for jotting down ideas, shopping lists, whatever I need out of my head goes in Google Keep. I love that I can also add my husband to any of my notes so I’m not the only one responsible for remembering something or if I get sick and can’t get to the store he will automatically have the shopping list right on his phone. Mint is another one of my favs. I love that I can set spending budgets. It combines all our credit cards, and bank card so I can see how much we’re spending in a category like taking out or clothes. It even alerts me when there has been an unusually high amount spent in a certain category. Google Calendar is another good one. I like plugging all my events/deadlines/paydays/birthday on my laptop but if I’m at the store and run into a friend who wants to set up a playdate I can grab my phone and see when we’re free and update to my calendar right then and there before I forget. Also, check to see if your bank offers an app. My bank's app lets me deposit checks, pay bills, transfer money, and I can check my balance anywhere anytime. I’m not lugging 3 kids into the car, sitting in the drive-thru just to make a simple deposit.
DON’T BOTHER SORTING THE LAUNDRY
There really is no reason to sort your light and darks. With the HE washers, we have nowadays that’s a thing of the past. I was taught to separate lights, dark, whites, and towels. Now I will say I still separate my towels and whites but anything that doesn’t fit those categories goes in together!
I am even known to add a towel or white article of clothing in with my regular clothes and I’ve never had a problem with it. I’ve never had white pants turn red, or a shirt destroyed from the towel being put in there. Heavy jeans are washed right along with everything else. Don’t waste time sorting your clothes like you probably taught. It’s not necessary. Another way I started saving time recently was I got myself one of these divided laundry systems on wheels. Now we can sort our laundry as we go and I know when a load needs to be done at a glance.
USE SIMPLE CLEANERS AND SUPPLIES
I will admit I love cleaners! I’m guilty standing in the cleaning aisle smelling all different cleaners. I even find when I’m in a cleaning rut I treat myself to new cleaners just to change things up. But sometimes less is more – especially when it comes to cleaning. Try using multipurpose cleaners. One cleaner that can clean multiple spots in your house not only saves money but time and space. Less clutter means you can quickly grab your supplies and put them away which will make you more inclined to actually clean. A small caddy will be able to hold everything you need and you can take it from room to room easily. Some of my favorite multipurpose cleaners are Mrs. Myers all-purpose cleaner, and the Dollar Tree’s glass and surface cleaner, but don’t forget about DIY cleaners too!! You can pick up a few ingredients that will clean almost everything in your house. In my last video on frugal homemaking a shared a FREE printable with my favorite tried and true DIY household cleaners. Check the description box to grab yours. Most people don’t like cleaning but if you simplify your cleaning supplies you can get the job done in less time.
PLAN YOUR MEALS
Our fridges are larger and we have chest freezers in our garages so take advance of it. Plan your meals for a week or even 2 weeks in advance. Shop sales and stock up when something you use often is on special or buy in bulk. Take advantage of online shopping. Our grocery store has an option to shop online and they will bring my groceries out to my car. They even have online sales and coupons you can only get if you take advance of their shop from home program. I would almost always save more money this way than I would if I spent an hour or more in the grocery store with my kids asking for something down every aisle.
ASK FOR HELP Speaking of asking for stuff one thing I advocate for is asking for help. Asking for help from your spouse and children doesn’t make you a bad housewife. Everyone needs little help sometimes.
My kids have their chores around the house like making their bed, loading, and unloading the dishwasher, sorting their laundry and they do it for a few reasons.
I can’t do everything around the house alone. If I did I’d go crazy.
They need to learn. They won’t live with me forever and I not going up to their dorm room to wash their clothes.
And it gives them a way to learn responsibility.
Even the baby helps me put her toys away.
Most nights the kids and my husband will help me clean up from dinner. I’ve learned the hard way that I have to delegate something to other members of my household.
FIND JOY IN THE DAY TO DAY
The way you view your role as homemaker means everything to how you will succeed. I know cooking cleaning, and laundry can feel mundane but try to remember how you view your household tasks affects your attitude.
Think about the impact your making in your family and home. Your the one that provides a joyful place of peace and safety for your family.
Real Ways Homemakers Can Influence the Family Budget
-The best way you can impact your family’s finances is to have a budget. Knowing how much money is coming in and going out will help you in paying off your debt and in knowing exactly how much you can really afford.
-Your home is the most expensive place to be. Even if you don’t live in a lavish palace. You have groceries, rent, utilities, electronics, activities for your children, and so much more. The costs add up and they add up fast.
So here a few suggestions to keep you on budget and in a few seconds I will get into some tangible way you can cut costs as a homemaker.
-Know your income patterns. For instance with my husband tends to earn less commission the first 1/2 of the year because companies are more restrictive with their budgets so they have a buffer for unexpected expenses, but the second 1/2 of year those same companies need to use up their budget because they will lose the funds if they don’t so tends to earn more commission.
-Live within your means and don’t try to keep up with the Jone’s. Many people I know drive Tesla’s, take European vacations and live in a bigger house than I do. If we tried to live that lifestyle we would constantly live in debt. It’s not worth it and not necessary. Just because you saw on an old friend from college on FB with and her family on vacation in Aspen doesn’t mean you have to. If all you can afford is for your husband to take a few days off from work and your family heads to the local beach with packed sandwiches so what! It’s not where you go but who you're with.
-Understand and come to peace with the fact everyone’s life, budget and spending habits are different. What might work for one family, won’t necessarily work for the next? But when it comes to frugal living cutting back on your spending, learning to save money and cut costs are universal.
Here are just a few ways you can cut costs in your home. I’ve broken them down into categories so let’s start with food because it’s one of with biggest expenses we can control.
Food
Cook from scratch. I admit I’m not the best cook but with Pinterest and using my Instant pot I bought on Prime Day a few years back. I have learned so much and I’ve been able to drastically lower the amount take out we order.
That leads me to meal planning. You will be less likely to order out if you have a plan of what eating and when. I don’t always stick to the day we actually eat the food on. So Tuesday’s meal may be eaten on Friday, but I know what we’re eating and I know I’ve shopped for the ingredients to cook those meals.
Another way I like to keep our food budget down and make meal planning easy is that I usually cook once but we eat twice. I will double a recipe and cook enough for us to have leftovers the next night. This saves us so much money. Instead of buying multiple ingredients for 7 different meals each week I buy enough to make 4 meals.
Another food tip I have for you shop the sales and stock up when prices are low. Because I meal plan around the weekly sales and I’m buying enough for two meals with those sale items I can save a ton on our groceries.
Also, we try to no shopping week every 4-6 weeks. At that time I will “shop” our pantry. I will great really creative and try to plan as many meals as I can with the food we already have in the fridge, freezer and pantry.
The last food tip I have is to drink water - Water is so much more cost-effective than sodas and juices and it will actually keep you hydrated. Skip the bottled water, and invest in a quality water filter or like us we order the 5-gallon buckets for Poland Spring and even with the low water cooler rental cost I still save more than buying bottled water and it works out to be less money than buying only juice and sodas.
Laundry
Wash your clothes in cold water. Coldwater uses less energy than hot water cycles and cold water is gentle on delicate fabrics.
Don’t buy expensive fabric softeners and use vinegar instead your clothes won’t smell like vinegar and you can use it in other areas of your house.
Let Your Clothes Air Dry - When I was kid everyone's back yards had a clothesline. My mother always hung our clothes to dry and I remember her being sad when they built their deck and she didn’t have a place for a clothesline in her yard. If you don’t have a clothesline you can get one of these drying racks for less than $20 buck at Ikea. Have 2 and they save me so much money. If you don’t have much room for a drying rack inside the house can get creative and hang them on the shower rod in your bathroom. Heck, when I was first married we didn’t have a dryer only a washer so I would hang our clothes on our kitchen cabinet handles. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
Cleaning
Alright, let's move onto cleaning. There are tons of ways to save money in the cleaning department. Last month I did a whole video on flour sack towels that you guys seemed to really like. and I talked about how you can use them in many ways around the house but one way to clean with them. These towels are inexpensive and reusable. When you are done watching this video I’ll have that one linked in the description so you can watch it for more money-saving tips.
Sticking with cleaning think about making your own cleaners. I’ve made so many different effective cleaners that cost me only a few pennies to make. Like carpet refreshers, all-purpose sprays, toilet bowl cleaner. I’ve made you guys another free printable with my favorite DIY cleaning recipes. These a link in the description box for that was well if you want to give some a try for yourself.
By combining DIY cleaners and reusable cleaning cloths you can have hundreds over the course of a year.
Clothing & Household Items
As homemakers, we typically have the responsibility of clothing our family and buying what we need for our homes like pots and pans and other necessities.
My suggestion is to shop second-handed and end of season sales. I love the thrift stores like Goodwill and The Salvation Army, but don’t be fooled into thinking you can only save money on clothes unless you buy second hand.
I have found some great deals during the end of season sales in stores like Target and Walmart. In September and October, I hit the clearance racks hard. I size up for my kids and when the spring and summer comes the following year they already have a full wardrobe brand new clothes they bought for a few dollars each. And I buy their fall and winter clothes as Christmas present because the stores will amazing sales for the holiday season.
I will shop for clothes at thrift shops as well. This is where I buy name brands and expensive items I would never buy in regular department stores.
I do buy most of the household items at second stores though. Kitchen tools and home decor pieces are always some good things you can find there. A well as furniture pieces that may just need a little DIY TLC to give them a new life.
Another way to save on house household items is to switch from disposable to reusable. Look around the house and see what you buy only to throw it away when you're done. It may cost a little more upfront but you will save in the long run. Bar mop towels can replace paper towels, the basket-style coffee filter can replace the paper ones you get the hint. Instead of literally throwing your money away buy reusable instead.
There are so many ways we homemaker can save a buck but I think it boils down to few things.
Know your budget
be intentional about your food purchases
Make what you can instead of buying it
Shop second hand and sales
Switch from disposable to reusable where ever you can.
