Qualities Of A Homemaker (WHAT MAKES A GOOD HOMEMAKER)

Hey Homemaker! Today we're talking the qualities of a homemaker. What characteristics should good homemakers posses? What skills and qualities make us good homemakers?

When I first got married I admit I was not a good homemaker. A couple years into our marriage I found myself unemployed and I was thrown into the role of homemaking without any real training. I had no idea what qualities a good homemaker should have. Shortly after I was let go from my job I became pregnant with the twins, and I was considered a high-risk pregnancy. So the job search was over and I was officially in my role of homemaker without a clue of what to do or how to do it. I’d like to say in a few months I had it all figured out and my house was in tip-top shape and when my husband came home the children and I looked our best and a hot meal was on the table.  but that was absolutely not the case. Despite the fact that we lived in a tiny 900 sq. ft apartment it was a mess and so where we. Not to mention my husband came home to cook the meal for our family because I had no idea how to cook. 

Being a good homemaker was something I learned and the qualities I will talk about in a second were something that developed over time. If you feel like your not a “good” homemaker. I’d like you to add the word “yet” the end of that sentence. “I am not a good homemaker YET!” If you really work at it you can become the housewife you aspire to be. 

For me, I started to look at the women in my life who I had the qualities I wanted to possess. Even if they worked outside the home because for me many of them did. When I sat back and thought about what I felt made them good homemakers these were the qualities I began to see in them. Women like my mom, my grandmothers, and my aunts. I started to pay attention and these are the qualities I feel a good homemaker strives for. 

Disclaimer: If being a homemaker or stay at home mom is not something you're interested in, then, by all means, please do what you feel God has called you to do. I truly believe that everyone should do what is right for their family and this video is not intended shame women who want or need to work. I feel all women should be respected to matter where they work in or out of the home.

Ok, let's get started!

As part of being a homemaker, a woman should strive for these qualities. And I say strive because we are not going to get it right all the time. We will fall short and make mistakes. Depending on the season of life were in things will be different for each homemaker. 

So the first quality of a good homemaker

1. She strives spends her time wisely.

We live in a digital age and we are bombarded with screens, from phones to tv’s heck we even have them in on the refrigerated door now. So choosing your time wisely is so important. I found that good homemakers live by a schedule.

and are disciplined with their schedules and time. They stick to that schedule because it helps them accomplish their daily chores. One thing I also found was that they usually teach their children to live by a scheduled routine as well, so everyone in the home can thrive. But they are also flexible. They know that even though it’s important to schedule their time, life happens. Kids get sick, cars break down or friend may need their help. Homemaking requires a lot of flexibility and they learn to roll with the punches. A big reason being self-disciplined and scheduling their time is so important is it allows them to be flexible they have to be.

Prov. 31:27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

2. They strive to do their job well.

They are productive and diligent and treats their homemaking duties like a full-time career. That means she’s is hard-working even when the going gets tough and goes above and beyond for her family. Good homemakers take pride in creating a clean and tidy home. Typically a good housekeeper is organized. It’s important for her to have a place where things belong, and she keeps things picked up and in their place.  Things like running out of clean clothes or empty pantries do happen often because she stays on top of her chores and plans meals ahead of time. Ecc. 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might.

3. They strive to build up their husband and children.

They are uplifting. I’m not going to pretend I’m always a joy to be around or that I never lose my temper but I do strive to be a source of encouragement for my family. Remember we set the tone for our home the same way a boss or manager sets the tone for an office. It’s important for us to gentle and patient. To nurture our loved ones. Our husbands and children should see us as compassionate and caring people. 

Prov. 16:24 Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

4. They strive to honors her role as homemakers.

We are the keepers of our home. It is our responsibility to make the home a place our family enjoys being in. To do our best to make our homes a place of peace. Home is where the memories are made and even though we can’t always control the bad ones it a good homemaker tries to create as many good ones as she can. Whether it be through special traditions or feminine touches throughout the home. Good homemaking is more than just “staying at home” It creating a loving home.  

One thing we need to remember is how important our job really is. Never downplay your role as a homemaker we have value.
